1998 Friend of NYSOMA – Alice McRae
The recipient of this year’s award had an unusual introduction to the OM program. She was walking down the street in the early 1980’s, when she was dragged in to judge at a NY OM Com petition. That was her first experience with the Odyssey ofthe Mind Program. Alice McRae liked it so much she took it back to her school district and started recruiting building coordinators, judges and other volunteers.
Alice became active in her regional OM activities. When AGATE no longer sponsored NY OM, she worked in the Rochester Region to assist in making a tournament happen that year. When a new state organization was formed, Alice wrote the Bylaws and was part of the State Director selection process.
Since then, Alice has served on the NYSOMA Board (still working on bylaws and part of the selection team for State Director). She is the Chairperson ofthe NYSOMA Marketing Committee (pin, t-shirt design selection and increased sales items at the state tournament). Alice has served as State and International Problem Captain since 1985. This role has provided our state with valuable information which has helped us grow and change into the organization we are today. Alice prefers to work in the background so you see the results of her efforts only in the smooth operation of activities.
NYSOMA proudly recognizes and appreciates all that Alice has contributed to the Odyssey of the Mind program over the years.
