2006 Friends of NYSOMA – JoAnn and Charles Kiesel
The Friend of NYSOMA award was established by the NYSOMA Board of Directors to honor the service of individuals, who through personal action, demonstrate in an extraordinary way, those social values affirmed to the goals of New York State Odyssey of the Mind. The inscription on the plaque reads: “In recognition and appreciation of unique talents and creative energies offered on behalf of NYSOMA.”
The recipients of this year’s Friend of NYSOMA award are JoAnn and Charles Kiesel. JoAnn and Charlie have been involved with Odyssey of the Mind since 1988. Although they have never coached, their daughter was on a “balsa” team. She came home saying that judges were needed for the tournament and would they do it? The first year Charlie did and JoAnn joined as a judge the next year. That was the beginning.
JoAnn and Charlie have judged in regions 12, 13 and 21, sometimes in multiple problems. They serve as problem captains, style judges, or weigh in judges. They also serve on the tournament committee for region 12. They serve as judges at the State level and have been officials at the World competition since 2000. They usually celebrate their wedding anniversary with their Odyssey friends.
JoAnn and Charlie are always willing to help out the Odyssey program. They make themselves available in the summer to work at the Spontaneous Combustion camps. If there’s an Odyssey function going on, you can be sure JoAnn and Charlie will be there and helping.
NYSOMA proudly recognizes and congratulates Charles and JoAnn Kiesel for their service and dedication to the Odyssey of the Mind program.
