2007 Friend of NYSOMA – Sue Carlin
The Friend of NYSOMA award was established by the NYSOMA Board of Directors to honor the service of individuals, who through personal action, demonstrate in an extraordinary way, those social values affirmed to the goals of New York State Odyssey of the Mind. The inscription on the plaque reads: “In recognition and appreciation of unique talents and creative energies offered on behalf of NYSOMA.”
The recipient of this year’s Friend of NYSOMA award is Susan Carlin. Susan has been involved with Odyssey of the Mind since the 1980s. Her involvement began when she was Enrichment Coordinator for Chenango Forks school district. She developed a strong contingent of students interested in Odyssey of the Mind. She has been active in Region 12 since its inception. It is hard to think of an Odyssey role Susan has not assumed: Coach, Judge, Head Judge, Problem Captain, NYSOMA Board Member, and Advisor to the Regional Director.
Susan has volunteered to judge at nearby regions for several years when they needed additional judges. As a member of the NYSOMA Tournament Committee, Susan has been a behind the scenes planner for the State Tournament. On the day of the Tournament she has been Assistant Problem Captain for Problem 2, the Technical Problem. Susan has judged at World Finals and has been a Head Judge for Problem 2 at Worlds.
Susan is quick to say, “I’ll do whatever needs to be done.” Susan has demonstrated an obvious love for the Odyssey of the Mind Program. Her enthusiasm for Odyssey is apparent to coaches, team members, and spectators alike.
NYSOMA proudly recognizes and congratulates Susan Carlin for her service and dedication to the Odyssey of the Mind program.
