2016 Friend of NYSOMA – Sharon Porter
The Friend of NYSOMA award was established by the NYSOMA Board of Directors to honor the service of individuals who, through personal action, demonstrate in an extraordinary way, those social values affirmed to the goals of New York State Odyssey of the Mind.
This year’s recipient is Sharon Porter.
As librarian at Emily Howland Elementary School, which is a part of Southern Cayuga Central School District, Sharon helped find students and coaches for Odyssey of the Mind, as well as coaching herself. For fifteen years, until her retirement in 2005, Sharon was a member of the Talented and Gifted Advisory Committee of Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, which runs the Odyssey of the Mind program in Region 11. She has also served as Head Judge for Spontaneous in Region 11. Sharon has judged Spontaneous problems at Regional, State, and World Final Tournaments too many times to count.
Sharon joined the NYSOMA Board of Directors in 2001. In September, 2006, she took on the duties of Judges’ Coordinator, which recruits and manages all of the judges for State Tournament as well as coordinating the Head Judge/Problem Captain training. Sharon filled this position for three years. Sharon retired from the Board earlier this year.
Throughout her many years of involvement with Odyssey of the Mind, Sharon has been a tireless advocate for the students. Her well-thought-out opinions, insights, and experience will be missed by all on the Board. Sharon has been a strong supporter of the Odyssey of the Mind Program and thru her involvement and long hours of dedicated time and energy, New York Odyssey is much better off. Thank you!
